Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised the alarm over an unauthorised payment into one of his private bank accounts, describing the incident as suspicious and a broader threat to the financial privacy of Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the transfer came from an unknown individual or entity. The transaction carried the narration “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
Neither Atiku nor his campaign solicited, authorised or had prior knowledge of the payment, according to the statement. He stressed that the account is strictly private and its details are not in the public domain, questioning how the information was obtained.
“How did unknown persons obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen?” the statement asked. Atiku warned that if the private banking information of a former Vice President and leading presidential candidate under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) can be accessed and used without consent, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe.
He expressed further concern that the disclosure may have involved people with privileged access to confidential data. Such access, he said, could expose account holders to risks from criminals including kidnappers, terrorists, bandits and fraudsters.
Atiku called the attention of the Nigerian public and security agencies to the incident, framing it as part of a series of “suspicious activities” ahead of the 2027 general elections. He suggested the development could be an attempt to damage his reputation as political activities intensify, and urged citizens not to be distracted by what he called “tired tactics” of character assassination.
The former Vice President said he remains focused on offering credible leadership and practical solutions to the country’s challenges.
