Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communications to President Bola Tinubu, has suggested that former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, may soon declare his support for the president.
Bwala made the statement while appearing on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout, where he responded to recent defections into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He criticized the opposition party, saying it currently lacks leadership and direction.
According to Bwala, “A reasonable person would not remain in the PDP because there is no structure or clear leadership in the party. The people defecting are doing so because they know there’s no future where they are.”
He argued that the responsibility of preventing Nigeria from becoming a one-party state lies with the opposition, not the ruling party.
“It’s the duty of the opposition to present alternatives and build a viable platform,” he said. “The president cannot stop people from joining the APC simply to avoid the perception of a one-party state.”
Bwala also stated that many politicians are aligning with the ruling party because it offers better prospects for governance and development.
“If you make your house unattractive, you can’t blame your neighbor for having more guests. Politicians are like sheep—they go where the pasture is greener,” he added.
He praised Tinubu’s inclusive style of governance, noting that the president continues to engage individuals outside his political party.
“Tinubu is running a government for all Nigerians, not just for APC members. He doesn’t operate a winner-takes-all mindset,” Bwala said.
In a bold remark, he hinted at a potential political realignment involving Atiku: “I told my friend that Atiku Abubakar might soon declare his support for Tinubu. Nothing is impossible.”
Bwala concluded by taking a swipe at the PDP, suggesting that associating with the party might now be detrimental to one’s mental health.
“In these days of mental health awareness, joining the PDP could be hazardous to your sanity,” he said. “We, on the other hand, are focused on governance.”
