At least 11 bodies have been recovered following a brutal attack by suspected armed herdsmen on Otobi-Akpa community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday night.
According to reports, the assailants stormed the community around 6 p.m., unleashing gunfire on residents and setting homes ablaze. The attack reportedly lasted for over three hours without any intervention from security agencies.
Hon. Agbo Kennedy, the lawmaker representing Otukpo/Akpa State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, confirmed the incident during an appearance on Channels TV’s Morning Brief on Wednesday. He stated that 11 bodies had been found so far, with search efforts still underway.
Describing the attack as horrific, Agbo said many parts of the community had been deserted as residents fled for safety.
“The situation in Otobi-Akpa this morning is appalling and gory,” he said. “You see images of five-year-olds, ten-year-olds, adults, the elderly, and women — all brutally macheted and killed. This massacre occurred before any intervention from the police, military, or local vigilantes.”
Agbo added that another corpse was discovered on Wednesday morning, bringing the death toll to 11.
He called on President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector General of Police, and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene and restore security to the area.
