Former Senate President, David Mark, has strongly condemned the latest wave of violence in Benue State, describing the attacks as deliberate and coordinated—not random incidents.
At least 15 people were killed on Tuesday night in a series of attacks across Otobi-Akpa and Emichi communities in Otukpo Local Government Area (LGA), and Utonkon in Ado LGA. Armed assailants reportedly stormed the areas, unleashing chaos and death.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser, Paul Mumeh, Mark said the frequency and precision of the assaults suggest a pattern.
“This is no longer a random occurrence,” he stated. “It appears to be an organised, premeditated onslaught. We cannot continue to sit back and watch our people slaughtered for no reason.”
He called on security agencies to act swiftly and decisively, stressing the urgent need for intervention. Mark also urged communities to form local vigilance groups to help protect lives and property, warning that the security situation in parts of Benue has become critical.
While encouraging the people of Benue to remain hospitable, he advised them to stay alert and be able to distinguish between genuine residents and hostile infiltrators.
“Inasmuch as we should welcome others, we must differentiate between legitimate residents and those with harmful intentions,” he added.
Mark extended his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the souls of the deceased. He appealed for calm and urged residents to cooperate with security forces working to restore peace.
This statement echoes a similar warning he issued on April 7, when he cautioned against reprisal attacks following an earlier series of deadly assaults by suspected terrorists in the state.
