Tension has enveloped the Egwuma community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State following a deadly attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Tuesday evening.
Local sources report that two men returning from Olegomachi to Egwuma were ambushed by armed attackers. One of the victims was reportedly shot dead on the spot, while the other remains missing as of the time of filing this report.
Residents say the attackers have occupied significant portions of Egwuma land since October 1, 2024, following the withdrawal of military personnel previously stationed in the area.
The absence of security forces has left the community vulnerable to repeated assaults and displacement.
“This is not the first time,” a community elder who preferred to remain anonymous told our correspondent. “Since the soldiers left last year, our people have been living in fear. The Fulani have taken over our farmlands, and now they are killing our people.”
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
