A second-year Political Science student at Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University in Makurdi is receiving treatment for severe burns after she was allegedly scalded with a boiling mixture during a dispute with her cousin and roommate on Friday, 28 August 2026.
Rose Adikwu, a 200-level student, told Students’ Union officials who visited her in hospital that tensions with her cousin, Agbo Felicia, a 500-level Chemistry student, had escalated over personal matters. Adikwu said she asked Felicia to leave their shared apartment.
According to Adikwu’s account, Felicia packed her belongings, went to a neighbour’s room, boiled water and mixed it with pepper, salt, onions and seasoning. She then allegedly returned, poured the mixture over Adikwu, locked the door and left. Neighbours who heard Adikwu’s cries forced their way in and rescued her. Felicia was intercepted nearby and handed over to police.
Adikwu is being treated at a private hospital in the Benue State capital.
Students’ Union President Akighirga Vitalis described the alleged attack as “a grave and unacceptable assault on the life and well-being of a fellow student.” He said the union would monitor the police investigation and any university disciplinary process, and would support appropriate sanctions, including expulsion if the allegations are proven.
“The Students’ Union will not condone violence or any conduct capable of endangering the life of another student,” Vitalis stated. He urged students involved in disputes to seek help from university authorities, the union or the police rather than resort to violence.
Benue State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Peter Aondongu confirmed the incident occurred on Friday. He said both students had been sharing a room and that the suspect allegedly boiled water mixed with salt and pepper, poured it on the victim and locked her inside. Neighbours later intervened. The victim was taken to hospital and the suspect arrested.
Aondongu noted that full details of the disagreement remain under investigation. He referred to both as students of Benue State University.
Police say the investigation is continuing. The Students’ Union has pledged to track the case through both the criminal process and any internal university proceedings.
