The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), under the leadership of Uchenna Madu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to unconditionally release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, along with other pro-Biafra activists currently held across the country.
This appeal was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the group’s National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel.
In the statement, MASSOB also criticized the federal government over the alleged marginalization of the South-East region. It pointed to the recent exclusion of the South-East from the Nigeria Student Loan Scheme and accused the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) of deliberately undermining the academic performance of students from the region, despite their consistently high scores.
The group further lamented the lack of federal presence in the South-East, noting the absence of a functional seaport in the region and the non-representation of South-Easterners among the top leadership of critical federal agencies such as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and the Nigeria Customs Service.
MASSOB also condemned the continued shutdown of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and the suspension of railway services across the South-East zone.
Describing May 30 as a “national day of introspection and self-examination,” the group emphasized that this year marks 58 years since what it called the “forceful and deceitful reintegration, reconciliation, and rehabilitation” of Biafrans into Nigeria following the civil war.
In preparation for the commemoration, MASSOB reiterated that all markets, schools, and both public and private transport services in the South-East would be shut down on May 30, 2025.
