The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has lost another member in the House of Representatives, as Amos Gwamna Magaji officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Magaji, who represents Jaba/Zango Kataf Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, cited the unresolved crisis within the PDP—from the national to local levels—as the reason for his departure.
Magaji is a two-term lawmaker and currently serves as:
•Chairman of the House Committee on Health Care Services
•Chairman of the Kaduna Caucus in the House of Representatives
•Deputy Chairman of the Special Ad-hoc Committee on the Restructuring of Government Agencies and Commissions, which is reviewing the Stephen Oronsaye report
He has also been a member of several House committees, including:
•Defense
•Reformatory Institutions
•Rules & Business
•Christian Pilgrimage
•Police Affairs
•FCT Area Councils
•Constitution Review (representing Kaduna State)
Magaji becomes the third PDP lawmaker to defect to the APC since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly, following the defections of Chris Nkwonta and Eriatheke Ibori-Suenu.
However, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda has strongly objected to Magaji’s defection, calling on Speaker Tajudeen Abbas to declare the seat vacant.
Citing Section 68(1g) of the Constitution, Chinda argued that while lawmakers have the right to switch parties, the law also mandates them to vacate their seats unless the party they were elected under has been divided or merged with another party.
“We are lawmakers, not lawbreakers. The Constitution clearly states the consequences of such defections, and Magaji has not followed due process,” Chinda stated.
The Speaker is yet to make a ruling on the objection.
