A heated argument erupted on Thursday between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Seriake Dickson over the application of Senate Rules in debating the proposed state of emergency in Rivers State.
The confrontation began during plenary when Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion to reorder the Order Paper, prioritizing the debate on the state of emergency. However, as he cited the relevant rule, Senator Dickson, representing Bayelsa Central, raised a point of order, which Akpabio hesitated to acknowledge.
In response, Akpabio, visibly irritated but maintaining a sarcastic tone, reminded Dickson of his recent television remarks, where he allegedly opposed the Senate’s approach to the issue.
“Senator Seriake Dickson, let’s not argue—it won’t be good for either of us,” Akpabio said. “We are all distinguished people; you were a governor, and I was a governor. Please turn off your mic and sit down. I watched you on television saying that whatever the Senate does, it will never have your vote.”
Dickson, however, stood his ground, emphasizing the need for mutual respect. “Mr. Senate President, we must respect all our colleagues. I have regard for you as our presiding officer, and I believe that should be reciprocal,” he stated.
Dickson further clarified that his point of order was to highlight the necessity of holding a closed-door session before open deliberations. Following his remarks, the Senate Leader formally moved for a closed session, seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro, after which the Senate proceeded behind closed doors.
