Authorities at the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK) are mourning the loss of a 300-level Biochemistry student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, who was brutally killed by suspected thieves in an off-campus hostel attack.
The incident occurred at a private hostel in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State. Nuhu, a native of Niger State, sustained severe machete injuries during the attack and was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Thursday, June 11, 2026. Announcing the tragic death in a circular issued on Thursday, the university’s Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Ibrahim Magawata, described the loss as a heavy blow to the institution.
“He was attacked in one of the private hostels in Kalgo by a group of thieves and sustained severe machete injuries. He was taken to hospital but sadly passed away early this morning,” Magawata said.
The dean confirmed that the university management has contacted the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, and that investigations into the incident have commenced. In response to the killing, security patrols have been intensified around Kalgo and other off-campus areas housing students.
A meeting has also been scheduled with proprietors of private hostels in the area to enforce stricter security protocols, including better lighting and the deployment of night guards.
Prof. Magawata urged students to remain calm and vigilant, avoid late-night movements, move in groups, and report any suspicious activities to security agencies. He warned against spreading unverified information that could trigger panic.
The deceased was buried on Thursday following a funeral prayer at the mosque of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi.
The university management extended its condolences to Nuhu’s family, friends, coursemates, and the entire student community, praying for the repose of his soul.
