The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has strongly condemned the abduction and murder of Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu of St. Mary Catholic Church, Tachira, Kaura Local Government Area (LGA), Kaduna State.
In a statement released on Friday, CAN’s Northern chairman, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, describing it as a heartbreaking loss. “With a heavy heart, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the FCT deeply mourns the brutal abduction and murder of Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, a dedicated servant of God and shepherd of the flock at St. Mary Catholic Church,” the statement read.
According to reports, Fr. Okechukwu was kidnapped from his residence on March 4, 2025, and tragically killed the following day, Ash Wednesday, by yet-to-be-identified assailants.
CAN denounced the killing as a senseless act of violence, emphasizing that it was not only a loss to the Church but to the entire society. The group extended its condolences to the Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna, the Diocese of Kafanchan, the priest’s family, and the Christian faithful affected by the tragedy.
The statement further highlighted the deteriorating security situation in Northern Nigeria, where religious leaders and innocent civilians continue to be targeted by criminal elements. CAN called on the Kaduna State Government, the Federal Government, and security agencies to take decisive action against the rising threats of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism. “The blood of innocent Nigerians, especially those who have dedicated their lives to serving God and humanity, must not be shed in vain,” the statement urged.
While acknowledging the efforts of security agencies, CAN stressed the need for proactive measures to prevent such killings rather than merely reacting after lives are lost. It also encouraged communities to play an active role in their own security by staying vigilant and reporting suspicious activities.
CAN urged Christians, particularly in Kaduna and across Northern Nigeria, to remain steadfast in their faith and resist the temptation of vengeance. “While we grieve, let us not be drawn into the temptation of vengeance. Instead, let us uphold the teachings of Christ, responding with love, prayer, and unwavering trust in God’s justice,” the statement read.
The association also called on the faithful to pray for the repose of Fr. Okechukwu’s soul and for God’s comfort upon his family, his diocese, and all those affected. Finally, it urged the government and security agencies to act swiftly in ending the bloodshed and ensuring that no Nigerian falls victim to such heinous crimes again.
