The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, as a national “Black Sunday” to honour victims of terrorism, banditry, and other violent attacks across the country.
The association also announced a three-day national prayer and fasting programme scheduled from Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14, 2026.
After the National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, emphasised that while prayers are important, they are insufficient to tackle Nigeria’s worsening security situation. He called for immediate and decisive practical actions from the government.
Archbishop Okoh urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity, describing the current situation as critical and unsustainable. He also renewed calls for the establishment of state police and the decentralisation of the security architecture to allow for quicker and more effective responses to threats at the local level.
Additionally, the CAN president demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all persons currently held in captivity and called for justice for victims of violence and their families.
