What began as a year of national service for 27-year-old Okebaram Stanley Chimaroke ended in tragedy and unanswered questions in the creeks of Nembe, Bayelsa State.
The Civil Engineering graduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State, and former Students’ Union Government president for the 2022/2023 session, was serving under the National Youth Service Corps in Nembe Local Government Area. On the evening of July 24, 2026, colleagues lost contact with him. Repeated calls to his phone went unanswered. By the next day the matter had been reported to the Bayelsa State Police Command, triggering a search that involved security personnel and members of the local community.
Days later the search ended in grief. His body was recovered from a body of water in Nembe. The discovery closed one chapter of uncertainty only to open another. Reports circulating among corps members and on social media have suggested he may have been attacked before his body entered the water. Neither the police nor the NYSC has confirmed those claims. Officials maintain that investigations are ongoing and that the cause of death will be established only after thorough inquiries are completed.
The NYSC in Bayelsa has remained largely silent. Calls to officials went unanswered, and official channels have offered no detailed public statement. One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the scheme has chosen not to issue further comments while the police and other security agencies handle the matter.
The death has drawn widespread attention and sharp demands for transparency. Friends, former classmates and fellow corps members have described Chimaroke as an approachable, disciplined and outspoken advocate for student welfare during his time as SUG president. His reputation as a young leader who carried the same commitment into national service has made the loss particularly painful across student and NYSC circles.
The National Association of Nigerian Students reacted with a formal statement signed by the President of its Senate, Distinguished Senator Ibeabuchi Moses Onyia. The association described the incident as a painful loss to the Nigerian student movement and insisted on a comprehensive investigation. While noting that allegations of foul play remain unverified, NANS called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the NYSC Directorate and the Bayelsa State Government to examine every aspect of the case and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
The statement conveyed deep condolences to the family, the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede community and the NYSC family in Bayelsa. It stressed that Nigerian students and corps members deserve the full protection of the law while serving the nation, and it demanded that no stone be left unturned in establishing the facts. NANS further urged the NYSC management and the Bayelsa State Government to cooperate fully with investigators, keep the family informed and urgently review the welfare and safety of corps members posted across the state.
Beyond the immediate circumstances of Chimaroke’s death, the incident has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by corps members deployed to remote and riverine communities. Difficult terrain, limited communication networks and delayed emergency response remain persistent challenges in such areas. For many observers, the case raises familiar questions about the adequacy of support systems for young Nigerians answering the call to national service far from home.
Chimaroke’s family is left inconsolable. They had watched him begin the service year with optimism, expecting it to open a new chapter. Instead it became his last journey. As investigations continue, those who knew him say they seek only a clear account of what happened in Nembe and the assurance that his death will not join the list of unresolved cases involving young Nigerians in service.
Justice, they insist, will not erase the pain of losing a son, a friend and a leader. It would, however, honour the memory of a young man whose commitment to service ended under circumstances that still demand explanation.
