The Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN) has called on citizens across all sectors to actively contribute to the ongoing overhaul of the country’s security architecture by submitting memoranda and policy proposals for the creation of state police.
The appeal follows an invitation from the Presidential Working Group on the proposed National Policing Bill, which is seeking public input to shape a comprehensive legal and operational framework for state-led law enforcement.
In a joint statement signed by Chairman Festus Fifen and Secretary Peter Ireh, the association said broad public participation is essential to ensure any decentralised policing system meets community security needs while upholding accountability, efficiency and human rights.
“The establishment of state police is no longer just a political debate but a necessity for our national security. However, for this reform to achieve its desired objectives, it must be community-driven, inclusive and guided by the experiences of Nigerians who understand the security realities of their respective environments,” the statement said.
CCAN urged lawyers, civil society groups, security experts and other stakeholders to use the opportunity to submit recommendations within the set deadline. Contributions, it noted, would help the Working Group craft a National Policing Bill that gives state governments a clear operational framework while ensuring effective coordination with the Nigeria Police Force.
The association also called on the Working Group to maintain transparency and give careful consideration to constructive proposals in the final draft.
“By participating in this submission process, Nigerians are not merely contributing to the development of a bill; they are helping to design a safer future for their communities and shaping the security framework that will protect generations to come,” CCAN stated.
