The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the hearing of a suit filed by Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, against the Nigerian Senate to March 25, 2025.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu fixed the date on Monday after the respondents’ counsels claimed they had not been served with court documents, despite the plaintiff’s lawyer insisting otherwise.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had approached the court seeking an order to restrain the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges from investigating her. Although the court granted the order, the Senate proceeded to suspend her for six months after adopting the committee’s report.
During Monday’s hearing, Natasha’s counsel, Michael Numa, SAN, told the court that all necessary court papers had been served on the defendants, presenting affidavits of service as proof. After reviewing the documents, Justice Egwuatu confirmed that all parties had indeed been served.
Following this, the Senate President’s counsel, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, requested an adjournment to allow all parties to harmonize their processes. Other counsels supported the request, arguing it would ensure a smoother and more efficient hearing.
Granting the request, Justice Egwuatu adjourned the case to March 25 and ordered that all relevant court documents be served before the next hearing.
Reacting to the development, Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Victor Nwaebonyi, emphasized the importance of proper service in legal proceedings. He acknowledged that while court interference in Senate matters is unusual, the Senate remains a law-abiding institution and would comply accordingly.
