A Federal High Court in Ibadan has convicted Olarenwaju John Ifagbemi for burning the Holy Quran.
Ifagbemi, identified as a traditionalist, was prosecuted on charges of insult to religion.
Delivering the judgment, Justice N. U. Agomoh ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, meeting the requirements of Section 204 of the Criminal Code Act.
The court sentenced Ifagbemi to three months in prison, effective from January 7, 2025.
Ifagbemi was arrested in Iseyin Local Government Area by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Oyo State after posting a video of himself burning a Quran.
His actions came at a time when some Islamic clerics were advocating for the establishment of a Sharia court in Oyo town, raising fears of religious tensions.
A source revealed that swift intervention by the DSS helped de-escalate tensions in the area.
“The Service’s quick arrest of the suspect prevented the situation from worsening,” the source said.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, Justice N. E. Maha of the Ibadan Federal High Court sentenced Babangida Ummaru, a terrorist and kidnap kingpin, to 60 years in prison without an option of fine.
Initially arraigned on two counts, the charges were later amended after the DSS obtained additional evidence.
The court found him guilty on three counts of terrorism and kidnapping under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2022, while discharging him on four other counts.
Legal analysts consider the 60-year sentence a landmark judgment, reinforcing the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2022.
