The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured an interim court order for the forfeiture of properties valued at ₦213,234,120,000 allegedly linked to a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
The order, granted on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, affects 57 landed properties located across Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna states.
According to court documents, some of the assets are linked to Malami’s wife, Asabe Bashir, and his sons, Abdulaziz Malami and Abiru-Rahman Malami.
The interim forfeiture came less than 12 hours after a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Malami, his wife, and his son bail in the sum of ₦500 million each, with 2 sureties in like sum. The court fixed February 17, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
The forfeiture followed an ex parte application filed by EFCC counsel, Ekele Iheanacho (SAN). In his ruling, Justice Emeka Nwite held that the properties were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities and ordered their temporary forfeiture to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The judge also directed that the interim forfeiture order be published in a national daily, inviting any interested individual or organisation to show cause within 14 days why a final forfeiture order should not be granted.
The matter was adjourned to January 27, 2026, for a report on compliance.
Malami, his wife, and his son are currently facing an alleged ₦8.7 billion money laundering charge before the court.
The forfeited assets include university buildings, hotels, schools, supermarkets, oil and gas filling stations, warehouses, plazas, residential buildings, and large parcels of land. Notable properties listed include luxury residences in Maitama, hotels in Jabi and Maitama, estates in Asokoro, Gwarimpa, Wuse, Kaduna, and Kano, as well as over 100 hectares of land in Kebbi State, among others.
