As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, a prominent voice within the legal community, Okey Ohagba, Esq, a past national officer of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has called on his colleagues to reflect on their critical role in strengthening the nation’s democracy.
In a message titled “Respected colleagues,” Mr. Ohagba paid tribute to Nigeria’s democratic martyrs and emphasized the enduring hope for a more truly democratic nation.
“Today, we not only mark Democracy Day, we remember and honour all Nigeria’s fallen democratic patriots who laid down their lives in pursuit of true democracy for our dear nation,” he said, “even as we grapple with hope to see yet a better and truly democratic Nigeria!”
He reminded fellow lawyers of their indispensable duty in nation-building, stating, “As lawyers, we are once again reminded of our obligatory duties as guardians of justice and critical stakeholders to nation-building, to do more towards strengthening our fledgling democracy.”
Concluding on a hopeful note, Ohagba expressed a heartfelt wish for the country’s democratic progress, declaring, “May Nigeria’s democracy blossom.“
The remarks come amid renewed calls for electoral reform, civic accountability, and broader rule of law across Nigeria’s political landscape.
