In a shocking display of impunity, field workers and hired thugs of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), led by one Obasi Dominic and Umesi Victoria, clandestinely disconnected the power supply to the building occupied by Barr. Ike Augustine and made away with about 200 meters of wire belonging to the property owner.
This latest illegal act was carried out without serving a disconnection notice, as required by law, and comes despite the fact that EEDC is already embroiled in a legal battle over a similar unlawful disconnection and assault on Barr. Augustine on January 20, 2024.
The suit, HOW/62/2024, currently pending before Hon. Justice L.C. Azuama of the Imo State High Court, Owerri Judicial Division, has already seen EEDC’s preliminary objection dismissed as frivolous with a cost of N100,000. With pleadings exchanged and issues joined, the suit is set for a definite hearing on April 29, 2025.
It is clear that this latest action by EEDC is a calculated move to overreach the pending case and intimidate the plaintiff into submission. Rather than respecting the judicial process, EEDC continues to resort to unlawful tactics, reinforcing its sullied reputation for impunity and extortion rather than service delivery.
This pattern of lawlessness by EEDC raises serious concerns about its regard for the rule of law, due process and the rights of consumers. The public and relevant authorities must take urgent notice of these excesses and ensure that EEDC is held accountable for its flagrant disregard for due process.
