The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has extradited two Nigerians to the United States to face charges linked to alleged online sexual exploitation and sextortion of teenage boys, two of whom later died by suicide.
Mudashiru Afeez Olawale and Adebola Festus Adekunle were handed over to US authorities on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, through the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had identified the pair in separate probes into sextortion schemes that targeted boys aged 13 to 17.
Investigators said the suspects allegedly used child sexual abuse material to blackmail victims and demand payments through money transfer services, gift cards and cryptocurrency. The cases were tied to the deaths of two American minors who took their own lives after being targeted online.
In one incident, a 13-year-old boy received an Instagram message proposing an exchange of nude photographs. The sender later threatened to share the images with the boy’s contacts unless money was paid. Communications continued even after the teenager indicated he planned to end his life, according to the FBI.
The US agency sought EFCC assistance to locate and pursue the suspects under Nigerian law. Adekunle was arrested and processed by the commission. Olawale faced a seven-count charge covering sexual exploitation of a minor resulting in death, enticement of a minor, interstate threatening communications, and distribution of child pornography.
Extradition proceedings against Olawale began at the Federal High Court in Lagos (Suit No. FHC/L/CS/353/2024). The court dismissed the application on June 10, 2024. The Attorney-General of the Federation appealed. On July 7, 2026, the Court of Appeal in Lagos (Appeal No. CA/LAG/CV/721/2024) overturned the lower court’s decision, clearing the way for the extradition.
The EFCC described the transfers as evidence of ongoing collaboration with the FBI against cross-border internet crimes that exploit minors.
