A prominent human rights lawyer and legal representative of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has urged the Senate to reject the nomination of Reno Omokri as an ambassador designate. Ejiofor warned that approving the appointment would create what he described as an error in the making and a national embarrassment that could damage Nigeria’s international reputation.
In a statement released on Monday, Ejiofor argued that Omokri’s inclusion on the presidents latest list of nominees reflects poor judgment. He described the nomination as a decision that could undermine Nigeria’s diplomatic standing, insisting that Omokri’s past conduct, especially what he called his pattern of ethnic intolerance, poses a serious risk to the image of the country.
The lawyer said the choice of Omokri for such a sensitive position was difficult to understand. He noted that the proposal was so questionable that it appeared as though someone in government had made light of the entire appointment process.
Ejiofor added that the former presidential aide’s online behaviour further disqualified him from representing Nigeria abroad. He described Omokri’s social media presence as a constant display of hostility and remarked that many of Omokri’s followers had already distanced themselves from him due to exhaustion caused by his frequent and intense outbursts. According to Ejiofor, a person who regularly attacked national leaders and public figures on social media cannot suddenly be entrusted with diplomatic duties that require restraint, maturity, and cultural sensitivity.
He also questioned the quality of advice that reached the president during the nomination process. According to him, whoever proposed Omokri for the role deserves strong reprimand because the decision threatens both the presidents image and the dignity of the country. Ejiofor recalled Omokri’s earlier online clashes with President Bola Tinubu and questioned how individuals who previously criticised the government now find themselves in positions of influence.
The most serious concern raised by Ejiofor centred on Omokri’s past comments about the Igbo community. He accused Omokri of repeatedly circulating opinions that insulted and misrepresented Igbo people. Ejiofor claimed that Omokri’s social media posts regularly promoted harmful stereotypes and contributed to divisive narratives that encouraged discrimination.
He said no one who has consistently attacked a large section of the country should be trusted to represent Nigeria on the global stage. He condemned Omokri’s past support for narratives that portrayed Igbo people as unwelcome in some parts of the country, arguing that such comments remain visible in the digital record.
Ejiofor called on senators, especially those from the South East, to closely question Omokri on how he intends to reconcile his past activism and anti government protests with the responsibilities of a diplomat. He stressed that the Senate must act in the interest of national unity and ensure that no individual with a record of divisive rhetoric is allowed to fly the national flag in a foreign country.
Although he acknowledged that Omokri might be more suitable for a spokesperson role due to his style of communication, Ejiofor insisted that giving him a diplomatic posting would be a grave mistake. He urged the Senate to reject the nomination in order to protect Nigeria from avoidable embarrassment and diplomatic complications.
