The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has described former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as a valuable asset with a strong record in public service but noted that he has certain weaknesses to work on.
Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television on Tuesday, Adebayo praised El-Rufai’s intellect and contributions to governance. However, he acknowledged that the former governor and ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is not without flaws.
“I see him as an asset, a hardworking individual with a verifiable track record of public performance,” Adebayo said. “However, he has weaknesses that he needs to address—but I am not his mentor or therapist. Nigerians will evaluate his past remarks and actions, and ultimately, many will recognize him as a capable public servant.”
El-Rufai, a key political figure in northern Nigeria and a strong supporter of Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, announced his defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP on Monday.
Explaining his decision, the former governor stated that the APC has deviated from the ideals of its founding fathers. El-Rufai played a crucial role in the party’s formation through a merger in 2013.
