The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is poised to welcome more high-profile politicians, including governors and lawmakers, following the defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
SDP National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, confirmed the development, noting that El-Rufai’s move has triggered significant interest across party lines.
“His decision has set off a political shift. We anticipate more prominent figures from the APC and other parties joining soon,” Gabam stated.
While he declined to reveal specific names, speculation suggests that former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, and former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, may also be considering the switch.
However, Fayemi has dismissed the reports, reaffirming his allegiance to the APC.
“My attention has been drawn to speculations about my defection. As I have stated before, I remain a foundation member of the APC, and that has not changed,” he clarified.
Despite such denials, political analysts see El-Rufai’s exit as a sign of deepening cracks within the ruling party, fueled by concerns over internal democracy and leadership struggles.
Gabam reiterated that the SDP remains committed to grassroots democracy and ruled out any potential merger with other political parties.
“We are not aligning with proponents of a merger. Such moves only create chaos,” he asserted.
