The immediate past National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Alex Ogbonnia, has described the deaths of Chief Edwin Clark, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu as the end of an era in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Ogbonnia likened the trio to the “Three Musketeers,” emphasizing their shared belief that restructuring was essential for Nigeria’s survival. He noted that they were committed to key national issues, including fiscal federalism, the rule of law, constitutionalism, prudent leadership, social justice, and inter-ethnic harmony.
Chief Edwin Clark, a prominent Niger Delta leader and the National Leader of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025. His death came just days after the passing of Afenifere leader Chief Ayo Adebanjo on February 14. The two had earlier mourned the loss of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who died last year.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ogbonnia highlighted the profound impact of their deaths on Nigeria’s political discourse. He recalled how the SMBLF, comprising PANDEF, Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, and the Middle Belt Forum, frequently met at Chief Clark’s Asokoro residence to advocate for national restructuring and good governance.
“The SMBLF was dedicated to building a restructured and prosperous Nigeria, where the rule of law, equity, and justice would thrive,” Ogbonnia said. “They were deeply concerned about corruption, excessive government borrowing, economic mismanagement, and the growing insecurity plaguing the country.”
He lamented that the passing of these three leaders leaves a significant void, especially in holding the government accountable. “With their deaths, the country risks descending into a deeper crisis. I weep for Nigeria because we may not see their likes again for a long time,” he added.
Reflecting on their legacy, Ogbonnia painted a vivid picture of the SMBLF meetings, where these statesmen passionately discussed the future of Nigeria. “In my mind’s eye, I can see the palatial living room of Chief Clark filled with distinguished leaders. I can hear their voices echoing through the halls. But now, with Clark’s passing, it is nunc dimittis—the end of an era.”
