Major Dr. Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late military ruler General Sani Abacha, has officially defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), signaling a new chapter in his political career.
Al-Mustapha arrived at the SDP headquarters in Abuja alongside his team, where he was warmly received by party leaders and supporters. Speaking at the event, he emphasized that his decision to join the party reflects his commitment to leadership anchored on justice, security, and national progress.
His defection follows that of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufa’i, who recently joined the SDP. El-Rufa’i has openly stated plans to challenge the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration in the 2027 elections.
Al-Mustapha, a key figure during Abacha’s military regime from 1993 to 1998, was regarded as one of the late dictator’s closest aides.
