Students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, have reportedly abandoned lectures and fled campus following the recent arrest of 47 students by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged internet fraud.
The anti-graft agency raided multiple locations in Ekpoma on February 15, 2025, apprehending suspected fraudsters in areas known to have a high student population, including Ihimudumu, Poultry, G1, and G2 streets.
A student identified as Chioma described the tense atmosphere on campus, noting a sharp decline in human and vehicular traffic.
“Since the raid, the streets are virtually empty. During lecture hours, the majority of students you see are those who live in the school hostels,” she said.
While the exact reason for the EFCC’s operation remains unclear, sources have provided conflicting accounts. One source attributed the crackdown to a syndicate accused of defrauding victims of N1.4 billion. Another source claimed the agency launched investigations after viral footage showed students celebrating their final exams on January 29, 2025, with extravagant car processions, sirens, money spraying, and road blockages.
The university management had previously warned against such celebrations and later canceled all final-year examinations conducted on that day, citing violations of school regulations.
In an official statement on its X platform, the EFCC confirmed the arrest of 47 suspected internet fraudsters based on credible intelligence linking them to online scams.
“Items recovered from them include 14 exotic cars, laptops, and phones. They have made useful statements and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the commission stated.
