A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday revoked the bail granted to activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore and ordered his immediate arrest over his failure to appear in court for his ongoing trial.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order following an oral application by the counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN). The court also issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.
Sowore is being prosecuted by the DSS over alleged defamatory publications against President Bola Tinubu, in which he reportedly described the president as “a criminal” in posts on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.
The court had previously scheduled June 17 for a ruling on Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case. However, neither Sowore nor his counsel, Marshall Abubakar, was present when the matter was called on Tuesday. The court was informed that Sowore had written a letter requesting an adjournment.
Kehinde opposed the adjournment, arguing that no compelling reason was provided. He then urged the court to revoke Sowore’s bail and issue a bench warrant. Justice Umar granted the application, revoked the bail, and ordered the activist’s arrest.
The case has been adjourned to a later date.
