The Federal Government has intensified efforts to activate 112 as Nigeria’s nationwide emergency number, directing key agencies to produce a full operational roadmap and standard operating procedures for endorsement by the National Economic Council.
Vice President Kashim Shettima gave the instruction on Tuesday at a meeting on the National Emergency Number 112 Project. He tasked a newly constituted committee drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Communications Commission, National Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps and other relevant bodies to finalise the plans, stressing that decisions must follow global best practices.
The National Economic Council had earlier approved 112 as the country’s single universal toll-free emergency number. The aim is to replace the current patchwork of agency-specific lines that often slow response times during fires, accidents, medical emergencies or security incidents.
Shettima told participants that visible progress would unlock funding. “Let’s make progress so that whatever time we have spent here is worth spending. And most importantly, the engine is finance. It is resources to drive the process. And I want to assure you that we will get the resources,” he said.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu expressed the Force’s full support. He described the unified number as a practical step that would spare citizens the confusion of deciding which agency to call when facing an armed attack, accident, fire, medical crisis, kidnapping or other life-threatening situation.
Mrs Lydia Aina, Personal Assistant to the President on e-Governance in the Office of the Vice President, outlined the current fragmented system in which emergency calls are handled across multiple agencies, systems and jurisdictions. The goal, she said, is to move from that disjointed arrangement to a coordinated and eventually fully integrated national framework.
She identified six immediate priorities, beginning with clear governance structures that define responsibilities among the agencies involved. The meeting focused on the underlying systems, people, institutions and standards needed to make the number work effectively once citizens dial it.
