The Federal Teaching Hospital Owerri has attributed disruptions to some of its services over the past 48 hours to a planned upgrade of its Electronic Medical Record system, rejecting claims that it deliberately shut down operations or that the exercise caused deaths.
In a statement signed by Public Relations Officer Ikechukwu Anyaegbu, management said the hospital was migrating to a newer, more advanced version of the system to improve efficiency, accessibility, security and the overall quality of care. It dismissed circulating social media reports that the facility had closed its systems to deny patients access to healthcare.
The hospital also rejected claims that 10 people died because of the upgrade, describing any link between the technical work and fatalities as a misrepresentation of the complex and life-threatening emergencies it routinely manages.
“There was no shutdown of clinical services. The hospital’s wards were onboarded to the new system ahead of the system going live, as part of the planned transition,” the statement said. “Clinics also remained operational, and alternative processes were deployed to support continuity of care during the transition.”
Management said the upgrade was intended to strengthen the hospital’s digital health infrastructure, support telemedicine, improve patient data management and bring its systems in line with evolving global practices. It acknowledged, however, that technical difficulties and workflow challenges during the migration had caused inconvenience, anxiety and delays in some services.
Hospital management, the ICT unit, clinical teams and technical consultants have been working continuously to identify and fix emerging problems and stabilise the new system. Significant progress has been recorded in the past 24 hours, with full service restored in many units. Outstanding technical issues are expected to be substantially resolved within the next 48 hours.
The hospital apologised to patients, staff and the public for the disruptions and asked for patience and understanding. It reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe, accessible and quality healthcare to residents of Imo State and beyond, and said it would continue investing in technology while strengthening contingency measures to limit disruption during future system upgrades.
