A civic group, Action Collective (AC), has demanded that Senate President Godswill Akpabio provide a clear explanation for his sudden withdrawal from the presidential panel investigating sexual harassment allegations leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a statement issued on Monday, AC’s coordinator, Dr. Onimisi Ibrahim, questioned the lack of public communication surrounding Akpabio’s decision to step down from the panel, which was set up by President Bola Tinubu on April 2, 2025, and is chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The panel, formed to probe the high-profile allegations, includes key government officials such as the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and one representative each nominated by both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan.
“The panel was established to investigate serious allegations that have drawn national attention and caused significant embarrassment,” the group stated. “It is, therefore, surprising that Senator Akpabio would withdraw from such a critical process without providing an official explanation.”
According to the group, there are unconfirmed reports that Akpabio cited interference from the Executive arm of government and a lack of confidence in the panel’s neutrality as reasons for his withdrawal.
“If true, is Senator Akpabio suggesting he no longer trusts the current administration or President Bola Ahmed Tinubu?” the group queried. “We believe the Senate President owes Nigerians and the international community a duty to clarify his position or consider stepping aside from his role.”
