Advocacy groups have called on Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to order a fresh, comprehensive probe into the disappearance of Globacom Roll-out Manager Olaoluwa Adetona, who has been missing for more than 16 months.
Adetona, 49, vanished on May 6, 2025, while on official duty in Imo State. He had gone to a site with two expatriates. An unknown person answered his phone that evening, and the family later learnt he had allegedly been kidnapped. The two expatriates were released; Adetona was not.
His wife, Funmi Adetona, and their three children have received no confirmed information on whether he is alive, being held or dead. The family said ransom demands were made and release assurances given, yet he remains missing. His vehicle was recovered with evidence of gunshots, but relatives say they have not been given credible proof that he was killed.
In an open letter dated September 9, 2026, the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation (GAFAMORG) and the National Coalition Against Mass Abductions, Atrocities, Killings, Extra-Judicial Killings, Mob Actions and Impunity (NCAMKI) urged the IGP to treat the case with sustained attention. They asked police to determine Adetona’s fate, reconstruct his movements that day, examine the circumstances of the expatriates’ release, and subject the recovered vehicle to forensic tests covering ballistics, DNA, fingerprints and digital evidence.
The groups also called for investigation of alleged ransom contacts, telephone numbers and financial trails, plus lawful access to relevant telecommunications and location data. If Adetona is still alive, they pressed for intensified efforts to locate and rescue him. If he is dead, they want authorities to establish when, where, how and by whom he was killed, and to recover his remains.
GAFAMORG and NCAMKI stressed they were not asking police to accept any allegations as fact, nor were they accusing Globacom, the police, the expatriates or any individual of wrongdoing. Their aim, they said, is to establish the truth and ensure accountability where criminal responsibility or institutional failure is found.
The prolonged uncertainty has exacted a heavy toll. Mrs Adetona has said the couple’s three children continue to ask “Where is Daddy?” The family has also faced emotional and financial hardship. Adetona’s father died in April 2026 after suffering distress over the unresolved case; his mother is seriously ill.
The organisations said the matter would be considered for inclusion in the GAFAMORG Citizen Justice Tracker, a platform that monitors missing-persons and alleged human-rights cases. They urged the IGP to identify the unit and officer handling the investigation, provide the family with an official contact for updates, and ensure the case does not fade from official attention simply because more than a year has passed.
