A police inspector attached to the Imo State Police Command was murdered early Monday while on guard duty at the residence of the state Commissioner for Trade and Investment in New Owerri, and his service rifle was taken by the attackers.
Inspector Henry Effiong was found dead in his room at No. 1 Sokom Villa Area E, New Owerri, the home of Chief Bar Rex Anunobi. His legs were tied and his body positioned toward the bathing area. Investigators believe a sharp object, suspected to be a machete, was used in the killing.
The commissioner’s housekeeper, Solomon Uzobu, discovered the body around 7:00 a.m. and alerted Anunobi. The commissioner reported the incident to police about an hour later. The Divisional Police Officer of the New Owerri Police Division led officers to the scene for preliminary investigations.
Police recovered an empty magazine and a walkie-talkie from the scene. Both items were handed over to the Area Commander, Operations. The inspector’s service rifle and mobile phone were missing and are believed to have been taken by the assailants. His body was moved to the Federal Teaching Hospital for preservation.
Investigators are treating a security guard attached to the residence, identified only as Genesis and described as a native of Taraba State, as a person of interest. Police say he is suspected of helping unknown attackers gain access to the premises. Genesis packed his belongings, switched off his phone and left the compound shortly after the killing. His disappearance has heightened suspicion of his involvement.
The Imo State Police Command said efforts are continuing to identify and arrest those responsible, locate the missing security guard and recover the stolen firearm. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
