Barely four weeks after an earlier security scare forced the evacuation of US President Donald Trump from the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, another gun-related incident unfolded near the White House on Saturday evening, prompting a lockdown and a swift response from the US Secret Service and the FBI.
The incident came as President Trump stated that the United States and Iran were “getting a lot closer” to reaching an agreement aimed at ending the ongoing Middle East conflict.
According to reports, gunfire erupted near the White House complex around 6 p.m. ET, causing panic in the area and triggering an immediate security response. Police officers, Secret Service agents, FBI personnel, and National Guard troops quickly sealed off sections surrounding the presidential residence.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the agency’s involvement in a statement posted on X, saying the FBI was supporting the Secret Service in responding to reports of shots fired near the White House grounds.
Journalists at the scene said they heard approximately 20 gunshots, believed to have originated near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building side of the White House complex.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said authorities were investigating reports of gunfire near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest and were working to verify details from officers on the ground.
Members of the White House press corps gathered on the North Lawn were hurried into the briefing room as Secret Service agents ordered them to take cover. Armed agents were later seen moving across the lawn and restricting access around the briefing area.
ABC News correspondent Selina Wang shared footage showing reporters ducking for safety as loud bursts resembling gunfire echoed across the White House grounds.
While the exact source of the gunfire remains unclear, CNN reported that two people were shot and wounded during an encounter involving Secret Service agents near the White House.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether there is any ongoing threat as investigations continue.
