Gunmen launched a late-night assault on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, near Jos, killing three security personnel in a fierce exchange that was quickly contained by responding forces. The attack occurred around 11:40 p.m. on Monday when the assailants stormed the premises of Nigeria’s premier policy research institute and opened fire on security operatives.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen attempted to force their way toward the residential quarters housing course participants. Security personnel, including soldiers and police officers, engaged the attackers in a gun battle, successfully preventing them from breaching deeper into the facility. Two soldiers and one police officer were killed in the incident.
A staff member who witnessed the attack described it as sudden and intense. “The quick response of the security team prevented the attackers from penetrating deeper into the facility,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The motive behind the assault remains unclear.
The sound of sustained gunfire caused panic among residents of surrounding communities in Kuru. The area has faced heightened security challenges in recent months, including repeated attacks on the nearby Federal College of Land Resources Technology (FECOLART), which forced staff to abandon their quarters. About a week prior, unidentified hooded men smashed the windscreen of a NIPSS Directing Staff’s vehicle before fleeing.
In an official statement, NIPSS confirmed the “security incident” but assured that the situation was swiftly brought under control. “There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the institute said in a press release signed by Dr. Osime Samuel, Head of the Public Affairs Department.
NIPSS urged the public to rely solely on official channels for updates as security agencies commence a full investigation into the attack.
