Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas has directed the immediate dissolution of every ad hoc committee in the chamber after they failed to finish their work and file reports within the required time.
The order appears in a circular issued by Clerk of the House Sidi Ibrahim and dated Saturday. It states that the dissolution took effect from Friday, August 28, 2026.
Earlier instructions had required all ad hoc committees to wrap up their assignments and submit reports in line with the House Standing Orders and established practice. Only two of the committees applied for and received extra time under Order Eighteen, Rule 5. Those two-week extensions have also expired.
In the circular, Ibrahim reminded members that ad hoc committees are temporary bodies created for specific, time-limited tasks. “They are not intended to subsist indefinitely beyond the purpose and period for which they were constituted,” the circular said.
He cited Order Eighteen, Rule 11, Paragraph 5, which sets the expected timeframe for committees to complete their work and report. With those deadlines long past, the continued existence of the committees was no longer tenable.
“Consequently, with effect from Friday 28th August 2026, all Ad Hoc Committees of the House stand dissolved; and activities being carried out in the name of such Committees shall cease forthwith,” Ibrahim stated.
Committee chairmen have been instructed to hand over all outstanding reports, working papers, records and related materials to the Clerk’s office for safekeeping. Members of the affected committees were told to take note of the directive and comply fully.
The move forms part of the House leadership’s effort to enforce the rules governing the lifespan, mandate and reporting duties of temporary committees.
