The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reassured officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force that the proposed establishment of state police will not lead to the disbandment of the national force or adversely affect their careers.
Speaking during his maiden official visit to the Jigawa State Police Command Headquarters in Dutse on Tuesday, the IGP clarified that under the new policing arrangement, the Nigeria Police Force would transition into a Federal Police Service. He emphasised that the force would retain its strategic formations and specialised units, continuing to play a pivotal role in the country’s security architecture.
“We are not being undermined; this reform is designed to strengthen policing and enhance security delivery nationwide,” Egbetokun told personnel, seeking to ease anxieties sparked by the ongoing national debate on decentralised policing.
The visit featured a detailed briefing by the Jigawa State Police Command on its operational successes in tackling crime and ensuring public safety. The IGP commended the command’s efforts and urged officers to remain focused and professional.
Later, Egbetokun paid a courtesy call on Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House, where he reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to closer collaboration with state governments in addressing security challenges.
“Partnership between the police and state authorities is crucial for effective intelligence gathering and rapid response to emerging threats,” he said.
The IGP’s remarks came on the sidelines of the 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, which also held in Dutse. Discussions at the meeting centred on insecurity, youth development, community policing, and enhanced local participation in intelligence gathering as key strategies to bolster regional security.
