The Imo State House of Assembly has passed a new bill aimed at overhauling land administration processes in the state. The legislation, which now awaits Governor Hope Uzodimma’s assent, is set to replace the existing State Lands Administration and Geographical Information Service Law No. 3 of 2021.
According to Deputy Speaker Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, who sponsored the bill, the new law is designed to make land administration in Imo State faster, easier, and more transparent. He said the initiative would modernize land processes through automation and digitalization, ensuring a more efficient and accessible land records system.
“The law seeks to transform our land registry into a fully digital platform, enabling traceability and centralized monitoring of all land-related activities across the state,” Iwuanyanwu explained.
He further noted that the legislation would enhance the issuance of land titles, improve dispute resolution, and strengthen transparency in transactions. The deployment of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, he added, would support data-driven urban and rural planning.
The Deputy Speaker emphasized that the law would also help curb land grabbing, racketeering, and document forgery. It proposes the establishment of an independent agency tasked with tackling illegal land activities, including title forgeries, multiple allocations, and encroachments.
Following its passage, the Clerk of the House, Chinelo Emeghara, was directed to produce a clean copy of the bill for the Governor’s assent.
