The Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodinma to approve 14 working days of paternity leave for male public and civil servants, allowing them to support their families during childbirth.
The resolution followed a motion moved by the Deputy Speaker and member representing Nwangele Constituency, Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu.
Presenting the motion, Iwuanyanwu stressed the importance of granting fathers time to bond with their newborns and assist their spouses post-delivery. He highlighted that strong parental bonds positively influence a child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development.
“Newborns depend on close parental relationships, which shape their early development. Fathers play a crucial role in providing support to mothers recovering from childbirth,” he stated.
The lawmaker also pointed out that several states, including Lagos, Enugu, Oyo, and Ondo, have implemented similar paternity leave policies, leading to improved workplace morale and stronger family bonds.
“Imo State is a progressive state with a forward-thinking governor. Implementing this policy will not only enhance family unity but also help resolve marital issues,” Iwuanyanwu emphasized.
He referenced a November 25, 2022, circular issued by the Head of Service of the Federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan, which approved 14 working days of paternity leave for federal public servants.
The motion, seconded by the Chief Whip and member representing Oru-East Constituency, Chigozie Nwaneri, received overwhelming support from other lawmakers.
After deliberations, the House resolved to urge Governor Uzodinma to approve the 14-day paternity leave and directed the Clerk to communicate the resolution to the appropriate authorities.
