Imo State Government has demolished illegal roadside structures and suspected criminal hideouts around the front gate of Imo State University (IMSU) following the death of a 19-year-old student in a road accident.
The exercise was carried out by Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, in collaboration with the Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) led by Frank Nkem. Officials said the operation aimed to restore environmental order and improve road safety by reclaiming public spaces that had been illegally occupied for years. Among the structures removed were several shanties suspected of harbouring individuals involved in hard drug peddling and other criminal activities.
The demolition took place less than 24 hours after a fatal accident at the same location. Police said a Lexus ES 350, allegedly driven at high speed during an unauthorised street race, struck Chibuike Friday, a 19-year-old student from Ebonyi State, as he attempted to cross the road. Another person, Bright Ukwuoma, was injured and is receiving treatment.
The driver, Dike Chibuike Micheal from Oguta, was arrested at the scene after officers rescued him from an angry crowd. Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso condemned the incident as a result of reckless driving and directed the State Traffic Department to conduct a thorough investigation, assuring that the suspect would face prosecution.
Residents and commuters in the area expressed hope that the clearance of the structures would improve visibility for motorists, enhance pedestrian safety, and help reduce criminal activity around the campus.
