Imo State has assured the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of its readiness to support efforts against money laundering, particularly in the non-profit sector.
Secretary to the State Government Chief Cosmas Iwu made the commitment in Owerri while receiving an EFCC delegation on behalf of Governor Hope Uzodimma. The team, led by Mrs. Korede Abdul-Aziz, was in the state for the 2026 Non-Profit Organisation Risk Assessment Field Exercise. The main session took place at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Convention Centre, with a prior courtesy call at the Cabinet Office.
Iwu said the state government stands ready to assist federal agencies in fulfilling their mandates. He described financial crime as a widespread problem that spreads easily and praised the EFCC for its ongoing work to curb such offences. Without the commission’s intervention, he noted, financial crimes would likely have risen further.
He specifically welcomed the focus on non-profit organisations, aimed at preventing their use as channels for money laundering or terrorism financing. “The government of Imo State under the pragmatic leadership of His Excellency, the Governor, Hope Uzodimma, CON, GSGI, appreciates this engagement. We believe that transparency and accountability are key to good governance, and we will continue to support efforts that protect our people and institutions,” Iwu said.
He also pointed to the state government’s own anti-corruption record. Upon taking office in 2020, Governor Uzodimma found that previous administrations had outsourced the preparation of workers’ salary vouchers to contractors, resulting in monthly losses exceeding N500 million through payroll fraud. The practice was stopped, and no worker is currently owed any salary under the present administration.
The visit marks the start of the EFCC’s field assessment in Imo State as part of the national exercise targeting risks in the non-profit sector.
