The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit lists of candidates for the 2027 governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections to Tuesday, August 11.
Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, announced the extension in a statement issued in Abuja. The original deadline, set under the revised timetable for the general elections, was Saturday, August 8. Haruna said the decision followed repeated appeals from political parties seeking more time to complete the nomination process on the commission’s dedicated portal.
In the same statement, Haruna notified voters who applied for replacement of lost, damaged or defaced Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) that the window to print downloadable copies of their cards would close at midnight on August 9. The cut-off will allow INEC to compile final statistics on PVC collection ahead of the Osun governorship election scheduled for August 15.
PVC collection in Osun State took place at Registration Area level from July 22 to July 28. Following complaints about large crowds and logistical difficulties, the commission extended the exercise to July 31. Collection then shifted to Local Government Area centres from August 1 to August 7.
Haruna also confirmed that downloadable replacement PVCs have been made available to voters in Odo-Otin and Ife Central local government areas whose cards were stolen when hoodlums invaded two collection centres. He stressed that the stolen cards cannot be used for voting.
Reaffirming the commission’s preparations, Haruna assured the people of Osun that INEC remains ready to conduct a free, fair, credible and inclusive governorship election on August 15.
