Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has strongly condemned Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo for banning public preaching in the state.
In a statement on Monday, Ejiofor described the decision as “an alarming overreach that raises serious concerns about religious freedom.”
Governor Soludo justified the ban by citing noise pollution and disturbances to residents, imposing a ₦500,000 fine on defaulters. He also announced a crackdown on “fake pastors and prophets.”
Ejiofor, however, argued that the move violated citizens’ rights, referencing Section 38(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended in 2023), which guarantees freedom of worship. He criticized the governor’s reported declaration that “all manner of public preaching, including crusades and outreaches outside church premises, have been criminalized” under an unspecified law.
Rather than an outright ban, Ejiofor suggested that Soludo should have focused on regulating and moderating public preaching to address concerns about noise pollution.
“Governor Soludo seems to be at his wit’s end in tackling the serious issues facing our dear state,” he said.
“How does the prevailing insecurity in Anambra relate to peaceful gospel preachers engaged in evangelism? These individuals are merely fulfilling their spiritual and biblical mandate – spreading the word of God and calling people to faith.”
