The presidency has suggested that it may not be the divine will for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to become Nigeria’s president, urging him to accept this possibility with grace.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, made the remark on Monday during an interview on TVC, while discussing political succession and the future of opposition politics in Nigeria.
Bwala advised Atiku to come to terms with political realities and consider working with President Tinubu for the country’s development.
“If I have the opportunity to meet him face to face, what I will tell him is just this: ‘Your Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, you have to believe in destiny. God gives power to whom He wills, and it appears that it may not have been God’s will for you to lead Nigeria,’” Bwala said.
He encouraged Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to align with the Tinubu administration to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress and secure a lasting legacy—possibly through collaboration.
“There are many other ways to make an impact. Since you’ve been friends with President Tinubu for years, you can join forces with him to help realize the Nigeria you both envisioned,” Bwala said.
“Your legacy could be that, in your final political chapter, you helped actualize your vision through a close ally. But if you continue to insist on pursuing the presidency at all costs, things may not end as you hope.”
Bwala also noted that Atiku has experienced significant political setbacks, including the loss of up to 70% of his political allies.
“Younger politicians who once rallied around Atiku are now forging their own paths and showing no signs of stepping back,” he added.
His comments follow a wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku, in a March interview, stated he was uncertain about contesting the 2027 presidential election, emphasizing the need for a strong political platform before making any decision.
