Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has revealed that it took him a year of reflection and deliberation before joining the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2013.
Speaking on Wednesday in Awka during a political rally, Soludo made the remark while receiving over 15,000 defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who officially joined APGA.
“The first political party I joined was the PDP, and I was their governorship candidate in the 2010 election. I worked closely with many of you during that time,” Soludo recalled. “But it took me one full year to decide to join APGA in 2013. When I finally did, I was disqualified from contesting as governor, yet I remained committed because I believed APGA was my last bus stop.”
Today, Soludo stands as the governor of Anambra State and the national leader of APGA. He described the party as more than a political platform, calling it a progressive movement that embraces inclusivity and equality.
“APGA was registered in 2002 as Nigeria’s first progressive party. In Anambra, it’s not just a party—it’s a movement where no one is left behind,” he said.
Addressing the new members, Soludo encouraged them to complete their registration at the ward level and join the party’s cooperative society aimed at empowering grassroots supporters.
In his remarks, the State Chairman of APGA, Mr. Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, formally welcomed the new entrants and praised Governor Soludo for his leadership style, which he said continues to attract people from other political parties.
Also speaking at the event, Mr. Chukwudi Umeaba, a former state chairman of the PDP, said the decision to join APGA was influenced by Governor Soludo’s people-centered governance.
“We have chosen to merge with APGA and support the governor in his vision for Anambra’s development. This is a winning team, and we’re proud to be part of it,” Umeaba stated.
