Kaduna — A 27-year-old woman, Fatima Lawal, who has completed her Higher National Diploma (HND), has been dragged before a Sharia court by her father, who is seeking judicial intervention to compel her to accept a suitor and marry.
Lawal Hamisu, a father of 11, appeared before Sharia Court II sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, praying the court to compel his daughter to present a serious suitor for marriage.
Through his counsel, H.B. Debo, Hamisu told the court that his daughter entertains several admirers but has failed to bring forward any for a formal marriage proposal. He alleged that her mother had poisoned the minds of the children against him.
“She should get a suitor, present him in court, and the court should marry her off,” the father reportedly stated.
Fatima Lawal, however, told the court that she currently has no serious suitor, as none of her admirers had proposed marriage to her.
Presiding over the matter, Judge Malam Yakubu Abdullahi described the case as a sensitive family dispute between a parent and child. He said he would hold private discussions with both parties to better understand the issues before offering further advice.
The case was adjourned to August 3, 2026, for ruling.
