The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed reports claiming that its 2027 presidential ticket has been zoned to the South-East.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, clarified that LP has not and will not allocate any of its positions to a specific geopolitical zone or individual.
Speculation over zoning arose following a statement issued by the party on Sunday, titled “2027: Labour Party Still Available for Ndigbo to Realise Presidency- Abure.” Some interpreted the statement as an indication that the party’s 2027 ticket had been reserved for the South-East, particularly for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who was LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election.
However, the Labour Party firmly refuted this claim, stating:
“The party did not at any time say it has zoned the presidency or any of its positions in the coming election”.
The statement further explained that while the party provided a platform for the South-East to pursue its political aspirations in 2023, it remains open to all regions and will not impose any zoning arrangement.
“The National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, while addressing South-East members of the party in the FCT on Saturday, only encouraged Ndigbo to unite and build alliances with other groups to achieve the presidency. He reiterated that the Labour Party remains a viable platform for such aspirations”.
LP emphasized its national outlook, highlighting its electoral successes across different regions in 2023, including seats won in both northern and southern states. The party reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its influence nationwide ahead of future elections.
