LAGOS — A Lagos State Special Offences (Mobile) Court has sentenced a 67-year-old legal practitioner, Taiwo Abidemi, to seven months’ imprisonment for breaching the state’s environmental sanitation laws.
Abidemi was convicted on Thursday after pleading guilty to a three-count charge that included breach of peace, indiscriminate dumping of refuse at an unauthorised location, and failure to engage the services of an approved Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste operator.
The offences occurred on July 9, 2026, along Guinness Road in the Agege area of Lagos. Prosecuting counsel Adetunji B.E., representing the Attorney-General of Lagos State, presented evidence before the court, leading to the guilty plea.
Delivering judgment, Chief Magistrate Adefioye F.J. stressed that environmental laws apply equally to all residents irrespective of social or professional status.
“The law does not grant exemptions based on status or profession. Environmental protection is a collective responsibility, and the court will not hesitate to convict anyone who undermines public health and safety in the state,” the magistrate declared.
The court handed down one month’s imprisonment on the first count and three months each on the second and third counts. Although the sentences are to run concurrently, the total term as reported reflects the cumulative penalty structure of seven months.
Reacting to the conviction, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) welcomed the outcome as a strong deterrent. Representing the Chairman, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd.), Corps Marshal Major Tokunbo Adekunle (rtd.) stated: “The ruling is a strong signal to residents and professionals across the state. The Lagos State Government remains committed to enforcing environmental laws without fear or favour.”
Adekunle emphasised that no individual is above the law when it comes to safeguarding public health and infrastructure, adding that the Mobile Court will continue its daily operations to ensure swift prosecution of environmental offences.
The case underscores the Lagos State Government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental infractions as part of broader efforts to maintain a cleaner and healthier metropolis. Residents have been urged to comply with sanitation regulations to avoid similar sanctions.
