Prominent lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has denied any involvement in the appeal challenging the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
While Ejiofor is officially recognized as IPOB’s legal representative, Aloy Ejimakor serves as the lawyer for the group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu. In a statement issued on Sunday, Ejiofor refuted claims linking him to the recently concluded appeal, which was dismissed by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on January 30, 2025.
“My attention has been drawn to a misleading tweet by Aloy Ejimakor, which seeks to misrepresent facts and mischievously associate my name with the recently concluded appeal on IPOB’s proscription,” Ejiofor stated.
He clarified that he had no role in the case after it was “clandestinely taken over” by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Machukwu Ume and Aloy Ejimakor in 2022. According to Ejiofor, the legal team amended previously filed appeal documents, introduced new grounds, and made legal arguments that he was not involved in or responsible for.
Ejiofor also revealed that he had explicitly requested that his name be removed from all legal filings related to the appeal, emphasizing that he had stepped away from the case.
“When it became evident that they were taking over the appeal, I specifically but respectfully requested the learned Senior Advocate leading them not to include my name in any filings,” he stated.
He accused Ejimakor of attempting to involve him in the case only after its dismissal, arguing that Ejimakor had consistently provided updates on the appeal without mentioning him until it failed.
“As the primary force behind taking over the appeal, Aloy Ejimakor and his team are fully responsible for its outcome. He should be held accountable for the details of what transpired, rather than dragging my name into his failed legal outing,” Ejiofor added.
He further alleged that Ejimakor was attempting to associate him with failure, a move he vowed to resist.
“I distance myself completely from the proceedings and the outcome of the appeal. Any attempt to mislead the public by linking me to it is both deceptive and unacceptable,” he asserted.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja, in a unanimous judgment delivered by a three-member panel led by Justice Hamma Barka, upheld IPOB’s proscription. The court ruled that the Federal Government acted lawfully in outlawing the group, citing its activities as a threat to national security. Consequently, IPOB’s appeal was dismissed for lack of merit.
