Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for freezing an official Osun State Government account, describing the move as an abuse of federal institutions and a potential attempt to influence the state’s forthcoming governorship election.
In a statement released on Thursday, Makinde said the anti-graft agency had exceeded its legal powers by restricting the account without following due process. “The ‘freezing’ of an official state government account without due legal process goes beyond the powers vested in the EFCC by the laws of our land,” he said.
The governor linked the timing of the action to the approaching Osun governorship poll, arguing it raised questions of political interference. “The timing of the action suggests that this is just another attempt by the federal government to unduly influence the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State,” Makinde stated.
He further accused the federal government of deploying federal agencies against opposition-controlled states, warning that selective investigations undermine public confidence. “When institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are utilised to witch hunt specific states or public office holders, it indicates that their investigations are selective and erodes public trust in these institutions,” he said.
Makinde called on federal institutions to act with fairness, professionalism and political neutrality, and urged Nigerians, civil society organisations and the international community to remain vigilant.
“Democracy cannot thrive where our institutions are perceived as instruments of political intimidation,” he added. “The rule of law must prevail over the rule of politics.”
