The Nigerian House of Representatives has given a three-day ultimatum to oil companies that failed to appear before its investigative committee over a N9.4 trillion debt owed to the Federal Government.
The affected companies include Waltersmith Petroman Limited, Addax Petroleum Exploration Nigeria Ltd, AITEO Group, Britannia-U, and two others. The ad hoc committee leading the probe disclosed this after several companies ignored its invitation on Monday.
According to the committee, only Belema Oil Producing Ltd responded to the summons. However, its representatives, led by Managing Director Ahmad Sambo, were asked to return on Tuesday due to the late submission of their documents.
In a prior notice on Sunday, lawmakers had summoned Addax Petroleum Exploration Nigeria Ltd., AITEO Group, All Grace Energy, Amalgamated Oil Company Nigeria Limited, Amni International Petroleum Development Company Limited, Belema Oil Producing Ltd., Bilton Energy Limited, Britannia-U, and Waltersmith Petroman Limited to appear before them on Monday.
The investigation stems from a report by the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation (OAuGF) to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The report highlights outstanding payments owed to the Nigerian government, including unpaid royalties, concession rentals, gas flare penalties, and other obligations tied to production sharing contracts, repayment agreements, and modified carry arrangements.
It was reported that the oil companies listed in the debt probe are expected to appear before the House between Monday, March 3, and Friday, March 7, 2025.
